Connect an agent

Add Shop MCP to Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code or another MCP client, then load Shop's skill so the agent knows how to shop with it.

Shop MCP is served at the root of https://mcp.shop.com/. Enter the address exactly like that. The server has no /mcp path and answers it with a 404, so leave it off even when a client’s own docs add it to their examples. Opening the address in a browser redirects to the skill.

The server uses MCP 2026-07-28, where a client opens with server/discover. Clients that only know the older initialize handshake can’t connect, even if they list MCP support. With one of those, use the CLI or call the server over HTTP.

Claude

  1. Open Customize > Connectors, add a custom connector named Shop, and enter https://mcp.shop.com/. In an organization, an owner may need to add it first.
  2. Turn the connector on in the conversation.
  3. To use your Shop account, choose Connect on the Shop connector in Customize > Connectors and complete the sign-in.

Then ask Claude to read the skill:

Text
Read https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md and use the Shop connector for my shopping.

Anthropic’s guide to custom connectors covers the settings in more detail.

ChatGPT

Add https://mcp.shop.com/ as a connection by following OpenAI’s connection guide, without the /mcp path its examples use. Check that the Shop tools show up, then enable the connection in the conversation. To use your account, complete ChatGPT’s prompt to link Shop when it appears.

Then ask:

Text
Read https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md and use my Shop connection for shopping.

Claude Code

Add the server:

Shell
claude mcp add --transport http shop https://mcp.shop.com/

Then ask Claude Code to set up the skill:

Text
Set up the skill from https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md and verify the Shop connection.

Shop’s plugin adds the same connection with the skill included:

Shell
claude plugin marketplace add Shopify/shop
claude plugin install shop@shop

Claude Code can also shop through the shop CLI, described in the CLI reference. Give an agent the MCP connection or the CLI, but not both. Each comes with its own version of the skill, written for its own commands.

Other clients

Any client that supports remote MCP servers over HTTP at protocol 2026-07-28 needs only the URL. In Gemini CLI, for example:

Shell
gemini mcp add --transport http shop https://mcp.shop.com/

For your own agent, call the server over HTTP as shown in the quickstart, and run the device flow when the shopper wants to use their account.

Load the skill

Each tool’s description covers its arguments. The skill covers the rest of the job: how to search without narrowing what the shopper asked for, when it’s fine to create a checkout, how to edit one without losing fields, and what to do when a write fails. It’s three Markdown files:

File URL MCP resource
SKILL.md https://mcp.shop.com/skill.md skill://shop/SKILL.md
references/catalog.md https://shop.com/references/catalog.md skill://shop/references/catalog.md
references/transactions.md https://shop.com/references/transactions.md skill://shop/references/transactions.md

Clients that support skills over MCP find these with skills/list and read them with skills/get or resources/read. Other clients can fetch the URLs. If you save a copy, keep the two references in a references folder beside SKILL.md: the skill links to them by relative path, and the same files are served next to it at mcp.shop.com/references/.

Check the connection

Ask the agent:

Text
Use Shop to find three desk lamps. Do not create a cart or checkout.

A working connection answers with real products, each with a seller, a price in a stated currency, and a link to the merchant’s page.

Search works while signed out, so a good answer here says nothing about sign-in. To check the account connection, ask the agent to read your Shop account. That calls get_account, which only answers when you’re signed in.
